Abstract

This study aims to examine the scope and method in which studies focusing on sustainable development goals—with their environmental, social, and economic dimensions—are addressed within the field of communication. For this reason, connected studies between the years 2021-2022 were examined using the bibliometric analysis method within the context of variables such as author count, scope/method, research field, conclusion, keywords, and citation count. The purpose was to discover prominent themes and methods in studies related to Sustainable Development Goals in the field of communication on the Web of Science database, to determine the level of connection between these studies and existing and potential developments in the field of practice, and to establish a resource for future research.

It was determined that the relevant studies primarily focused on the environmental dimensions of sustainability, and that the studies conducted in connection with environmental and social sustainability had an interdisciplinary nature. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that studies on economic sustainability were limited compared to those centered on social and environmental sustainability, and that the studies in general focused on limited dimensions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Other important findings identified in the study include the limited alignment of the relevant studies with sectoral trends and the restricted use of new computer-aided research methodologies. Therefore, recommendations are provided for current and potential researchers within the communication discipline, taking into account new trends at the sectoral and academic levels regarding the development goals associated with sustainability.
